Tris Hussey just wrote a great post on ‘characters’ playing in the social media forums. He says that we’ve finally reached a point where we see social media for what is it: writing, storytelling, and sharing. Character and pen names have always been integral to storytelling and he for one is having fun interacting with characters and story online.
I am a little biased as someone who has worked in Broadcast, but this is what has always appealed me with technology, new media and social media. How does one better use these mediums to tell a story? In my own own experimenting, I have come to the conclusion that social media is a terrific vehicle in storytelling as it allows the audience to interact with the characters and as such have an impact on the story.
This is one of the things that I loved about Dave Olson’s talk at WordCampWhistler (aside from how animated he was, of course). He was reminding us that what we are doing as bloggers is telling stories.
Like Tris, I follow Sookie, the waitress from True Blood and love how she tweets back and forth with me about life her as a waitress. I was also thrilled to discover the characters of Pushing Daisy on twitter. I do tweet with Ned from time to time, but these guys need to tweet a little less about what’s happening at abc and be a little more ‘real’. They could take a page out of both Sookie’s book and that of Janey from showbizzle.

I don’t, however, like tweeting with characters that only talk amoungst themselves and only engage with you when they want your votes for Shorty Awards. This is a huge turn off for me.
Love this post and Tris’ thoughts! You should go have a read.
